Embracing My Yoga Journey: Beyond the Mat

Hello, dear readers, and welcome back to Just Catrina!

Today, I want to take you on a journey through one of the most transformative experiences of my life – my first yoga certification class. This journey was not just about learning poses and techniques; it was about embracing my own self-worth and challenging the inner critic that has plagued me for years.

Doubts and Insecurities: As I walked into that yoga studio on the first day of class, I couldn't help but feel a wave of doubt wash over me. The other women in the class seemed so beautifully slim and graceful, while I had my own insecurities about my body. I raised my hand and asked the instructor if I truly belonged there, given my size. Her warm smile and the reassuring nod from the girl beside me instantly eased my worries.

Size Doesn't Define Us: The instructor's response was a profound revelation. She emphasized that yoga is not about the shape or size of your body; it's about the connection you build with yourself, both physically and mentally. The practice of yoga, she explained, is a journey within, where self-acceptance and self-love are the true milestones.

A Lesson in Ahimsa: During the course, my instructor introduced me to the concept of "ahimsa," which means nonviolence or non-harm to oneself and others. It extends far beyond the physical aspect of yoga and encompasses our mental, spiritual, and emotional well-being. Ahimsa invites us to be gentle with ourselves, to silence the inner critic, and to practice self-compassion.

Breathe, Catrina, Breathe: My instructor noticed that I was not calm; my thoughts were all over the place. She kindly reminded me, "Catrina, just breathe," at least three times. Her words became a mantra for me, a reminder to find stillness in my mind and come back to the present moment.

A Beautiful Journey Ahead: As the days of the certification class passed, I realized that this journey was about much more than perfecting poses. It was an exploration of self-discovery, a path to self-acceptance, and a commitment to living a life filled with compassion, not only towards others but towards myself.

Beyond the Mat: My instructor's wisdom transcended the boundaries of the yoga studio. She encouraged me to carry the principles of ahimsa with me into my daily life. It's not just about what we do on the mat; it's about how we show up in the world.

Closing Thoughts: My yoga journey is just beginning, and I may not have perfected the downward dog just yet. But what I have perfected is my understanding of self-acceptance and my commitment to treating myself with kindness.

Thank you for joining me on this journey. Remember, no matter where you are on your own path, you are always exactly where you need to be.

With self-love and gratitude,

Just Catrina
